On May 11, 2018, Nexus Executive Director Erik Azulay was invited as a panelist to discuss how startups can build sustainable businesses at a workshop on “Protecting and Leveraging Intellectual Property” organized by Universe Research Foundation in Pune.

Erik was a part of a panel to address one of the primary roadblocks that start-ups face: scalability. He discussed the basics of formulation of business plans, structuring models for young start-ups, and common hurdles faced by start-ups in scaling up. He was particularly impressed by the enthusiastic participation of the startups, reflected during the Q&A session after the panel discussion.

The workshop was well attended by the startups and industry experts. It also included sessions on the importance of IP for startups, design and interfacing with new technologies and basics of contracts, licensing and how to protect confidential information. The sessions were led by Komal Kalha, Senior Counsel, United States Patent and Trademark Office; and Essenese Obhan, Managing Partner, Obhan & Associates. Komal Kalha is a policy and legal advisor on all aspects of intellectual property for India and other South Asian countries.

Universe Research Foundation (URF) is a non-profit organization that has worked for 14 years in the fields of public policy and governance. The Foundation is actively engaged in research and capacity building at the institutional, community and organization level to promote participation of all stakeholders in policy and governance.
