Bitcoin is the latest internet buzzword and with its valuation crossing $15000 it is attracting attention from all areas. Bitcoins are based on blockchain technology which has applications beyond cryptocurrency. Blockchain technology is an incorruptible digital ledger of economic transactions that can be programmed to record not just financial transactions but virtually everything of value; it is also called a distributed database.

In order to create awareness about blockchain technology, big data methods and how startups can make use of these for their businesses, Nexus hosted a talk by Prof. Shivendu Shivendu on December 14th, 2017 at the American Center. Watch the video below or at Facebook Live.

Prof. Shivendu Shivendu, is the assistant professor in the Information Systems & Decision Sciences department of the University of South Florida’s (USF) Muma College of Business. He has created and taught undergraduate, MBA/MS, and doctoral courses in areas related to economics of information systems, management of information systems, IT strategy, IT consulting, and electronic commerce. His research focuses on analytical modeling of business models based on technology platforms. He is a graduate of IIT Kanpur and did his MBA from IIM Ahmedabad.

Prof. Shivendu started from the basics of why we need blockchain technology and why big data methods are required to solve the current problems. He built on this by introducing the concept of recording the transactions in a ledger and ultimately why a digital ledger (which is a blockchain) is a necessity and how it is becoming a foundational technology giving birth to new industries.

The presentation was followed by the highly informational Q&A where startups asked specific queries; it ended with a networking reception where the entrepreneurs got a chance for a one on one interaction with Prof. Shivendu.
