Nexus-backed startup Dhakka Brakes has been awarded a grant of 10 lakhs of rupees ($15,000 USD) from the Millennium Alliance to carry out a pilot program for installation and testing its proprietary Dhakka Brake system.

Dhakka Brakes has invented a revolutionary regenerative brakes system to lessen the harsh effort needed to operate a cycle rickshaw. The brakes store momentum of the rickshaw while braking and on release of the brakes push the vehicle forward.

The grant will provide funds for Dhakka to install and test 100 brake systems with rickshaw owners throughout Delhi and will be a great example of introducing a sustainable business model while having a positive impact on a “bottom of the pyramid” market segment.
